It controls temperature, flow and where the water goes, so choosing the wrong one can leave a beautifully planned bathroom with a shower that feels underpowered, awkward or difficult to regulate. Start with your water system and pressure

Before comparing finishes or handle styles, identify the water system supplying the shower. This is the deciding factor for compatibility and performance. Most UK homes have either a gravity-fed system with a cold-water cistern and hot-water cylinder, a combi boiler, an unvented cylinder or a mains-fed arrangement.

Each shower valve has a stated minimum operating pressure, usually measured in bar. Low-pressure valves are designed to work with gravity-fed systems, while high-pressure models suit combi boilers, unvented systems and mains-pressure supplies. A valve with a 1.0 bar minimum may not deliver a satisfying flow where the available pressure is only 0.2 bar. Equally, selecting a low-pressure valve does not automatically solve a low-flow problem if pipework, shower heads or other restrictions are limiting the supply.

Check both hot and cold supplies, not simply the headline pressure of the system. Balanced supplies generally give a thermostatic valve the best chance of maintaining a stable temperature. If you are unsure what system you have, establish this before narrowing down the range. It can save time, returns and compromises later in the project.

Choose thermostatic control for everyday confidence

For most family bathrooms, a thermostatic shower valve is the practical choice. It blends hot and cold water to a selected temperature and reacts if another outlet in the home is used. That means less chance of a sudden temperature change when someone turns on a tap or flushes a toilet.

A manual mixer valve is usually a simpler, more budget-conscious option. It can look smart and work well where supply conditions are consistent, but it does not provide the same automatic temperature regulation. Manual valves are often selected for less frequently used spaces or where straightforward controls are the main priority.

Thermostatic does not mean entirely maintenance-free. Hard-water areas can cause limescale to build up around a cartridge over time, and filters may need occasional cleaning. Choosing a quality valve with accessible servicing parts is worthwhile, particularly in a household where the shower is used heavily.

Temperature stops and safety features

Look for a temperature safety stop, commonly set around 38°C. This prevents the control from being turned hotter accidentally and is especially useful for homes with children, older relatives or tenants. To select a hotter setting, the user presses a button or releases the stop deliberately.

Some thermostatic valves also shut down or significantly reduce flow if the cold-water supply fails. Features vary between products, so compare specifications rather than assuming every thermostatic model offers the same level of protection.

Decide how many outlets you need

An outlet is simply the water route controlled by the valve. One outlet supplies one shower function, such as a fixed overhead shower or a handset. Two outlets allow you to switch between two functions, typically a drencher head and a separate hand shower.

A two-outlet shower valve is a popular choice in family bathrooms because it combines a generous overhead spray with the flexibility of a handset. The handset is useful for rinsing hair, cleaning the shower area and helping children shower independently. For a compact enclosure where a single rail kit is all that is needed, a one-outlet valve keeps the specification simpler and the cost lower.

Three-outlet valves are available for more elaborate layouts, such as an overhead shower, hand shower and body jets. They can create an impressive result, but they demand careful thought about available pressure, flow rate and hot-water capacity. Running several outlets at once may not be realistic on every domestic system.

Diverter or separate controls?

With a multi-outlet valve, a diverter sends water to one outlet or another. In many designs, one control sets the temperature and another chooses the outlet. Some valves use individual flow controls, allowing more than one outlet to operate at the same time.

This is a genuine choice rather than an automatic upgrade. Simultaneous use feels more luxurious, but it requires a water supply that can support it. A diverter valve is often the more efficient option for standard homes, as it directs the available flow to the shower function being used.

Concealed or exposed shower valves

Concealed valves sit behind the wall, with only the trim plate and controls visible. They are ideal for a clean, uncluttered look and work particularly well with wall panels, large-format tiles and contemporary shower spaces. They also give you freedom to position the controls away from the direct spray, making it easier to turn on the shower without getting wet.

The trade-off is that the valve body is hidden within the wall cavity. Choose the valve before finalising wall finishes, and make sure the trim kit is compatible with the concealed body. Some ranges use a universal valve body with several trim styles, while others are designed as a complete set. Do not mix parts between ranges unless the manufacturer confirms compatibility.

Exposed shower valves are mounted visibly on the finished wall. They are a strong option for straightforward replacements, traditional bathrooms and spaces where a feature valve suits the look. The bar-style thermostat is particularly popular: compact, practical and often paired with a rigid riser rail and overhead shower. It can also make future cartridge access more straightforward.

Match the valve to the shower style

The valve needs to work visually as well as technically. A round valve with a slim plate complements soft curves, while square controls and angular trim tend to suit modern furniture, basins and brassware. For traditional rooms, crosshead handles, lever controls and classic exposed designs can create a more considered finish.

Finish matters too. Chrome remains the versatile, value-led option because it pairs easily with most taps and accessories. Matt black creates contrast in contemporary schemes, while brushed brass, brushed nickel and gunmetal can add warmth or a more distinctive design detail. Where possible, choose the valve, shower head, handset and other visible brassware in the same finish family. Slight differences between brands can be more noticeable once everything is in place.

Do not let appearance override usability. A small, minimalist control may look excellent but be less convenient with wet hands. Lever handles are generally easy to grip, and clearly marked controls help in busy family bathrooms and rental properties.

Check the details that affect daily use

Product photographs cannot show every practical difference. Read the specification for inlet centres, connection size, minimum and maximum pressure, mounting depth and outlet configuration. For exposed bar valves, standard 150 mm inlet centres are common, but checking the existing pipe centres is essential on a replacement project.

For concealed designs, pay close attention to the required cavity depth. A particularly slim wall build-up may limit the choice of valve body, while a deep wall can require extension parts in some ranges. Also consider where the controls will sit in relation to shower screens, niches, grab rails and the shower user. A good-looking position is not always the most comfortable one.

Think about flow across the whole shower set. A large rainfall head can be appealing, but a compact head with well-designed spray nozzles may feel better on a lower-pressure system. If you want a rainfall head, choose one that is proportionate to the water supply rather than simply choosing the largest diameter available.

Set a sensible budget

The cheapest valve is not always the best value when it is controlling a central part of the bathroom. Put your budget towards reliable thermostatic performance, suitable pressure compatibility and a finish that will work with the rest of the room. Then decide whether premium extras, such as multiple outlets or a designer trim plate, are worth it for your space.
